Application example: Mold release tape

Mold release tapes are high-performance, heat-resistant adhesive tapes applied directly onto a mold surface—underneath where the composite part is built up—to create a durable, non-stick barrier between the tooling and the curing resin.

They typically feature a PTFE (Teflon) coated fiberglass, extruded fluoropolymer, or skived PTFE film backing paired with a high-temperature silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive. This design prevents cured resins from bonding with the expensive mold surface, allowing finished parts to lift away cleanly without causing damage to the part or the tool.

Unlike single-use flashbreaker tapes that are peeled off after every curing cycle, mold release tapes are highly durable and engineered to stay on the tool to survive multiple demolding pulls. Their specific applications are critical in e.g. aerospace and defense for the layup of structural components like airplane fuselage sections, helicopter rotor blades etc. By reducing seams on large parts and preventing surface imperfections (such as through specialized, pinhole-free laminates), these tapes maximize tool life and dramatically lower post-production finishing labor.

APPLICATION Example: Flashbreaker Tape

Flashbreaker tapes are high-strength, high-temperature pressure-sensitive masking tapes—typically consisting of tough polyester (PET) or polyimide films paired with specialized silicone or rubber-based adhesives—engineered to endure the harsh heat and pressure of oven or autoclave curing environments.

Their primary, specific application is in advanced composite molding and fabrication within high-precision industries like aerospace and defense: Positioned along the outer boundaries of a composite layup, these tapes protect expensive tooling by capturing overflowing resin ("flash"); once cured, the tape is peeled off, cleanly "breaking" the excess resin away from the tool in a single motion to eliminate tedious cleanup. They are also extensively utilized to hold down and position vacuum bagging materials, release films, and thermocouple wires during layup, and non-silicone rubber adhesive versions are frequently selected to avoid downstream paint defects like "orange peel".

Application Example: Paint Masking

Masking tapes for composite paint processes are pressure-sensitive tapes—typically built on paper backings, cloth or thin polyester (PET) film - paired with a rubber- or acrylic-based adhesive—engineered to hold a sharp masking edge through primer and topcoat application without lifting, bleeding, or leaving adhesive residue behind.

Their primary application in composite and UAV manufacturing is defining clean paint boundaries during finishing: applied along panel edges, access panels, sensor windows, and fastener locations, they create the crisp, straight paint line a finished airframe requires, while conforming cleanly to the curved and compound-angle surfaces typical of composite skins. Once the coating cures, the tape releases in a single clean pullno torn edges, no residue, no damage to the underlying paint or composite substrate—which matters on lightweight UAV structures where any rework adds unacceptable weight or schedule risk. The adhesive is also formulated to resist solvent bleed-through from primers and topcoats and to hold up through bake-cure temperatures without softening or transferring onto the finished surface.
